Georgia Juvenile Crime Lawyer
There are unique and specific laws in Georgia that pertain to juveniles. Georgia law states the following:
- The juvenile court has jurisdictoin over any child under the age of 17 who has commited a crime.
- Juveniles must be detained in juvenile detention unless they are awaiting trial as an an adult.
- Juvenile offenders may not be detained in a secure juvenile facility without approval from a superior judge, juvenile court judge or juvenile court intake officer.
- The parents or guardians of a juvenile being charged with a criminal offense must be notified as soon as possible if a child is taken into custody.
Juveniles are entitled to the same rights to counsel and bail as adults. That means a juvenile can decline to answer questions unless he has a defense attorney present.
